I always imagined childbirth being a lot like in the movies. Your water breaks, you labor, maybe scream a little, push a few times and voila BABY! A day or two later you take your perfect bundle of joy home and life is grand. You see it everywhere, women with healthy babies; there is no reason to think that your experience will be any different. So when the day comes that your child is diagnosed with special needs, life, as you know it ends. Days quickly become filled with doctor’s appointments and therapies. You are no longer solely a mother but an advocate as well. You are the voice for a child who has none. You have to be strong because there is no other choice. This is your child, the child you fell in love with the second you knew you were pregnant. No amount of “special needs” can lesson that love they will only make that love greater.
